The project involved the completion of a novel polyimide membrane facility used for carbon dioxide removal and was undertaken alongside existing plant which had to be kept operating without disruption. The Ballera Gas Centre is one of the major gas-producing hubs supplying the state of Queensland and is operated by Santos, Australia's largest gas producer.
The scope of work included a second dew point control unit (DPCU), upgrades to the existing membrane CO2 removal facilities, together with associated interconnection and utility works. The Aker Kvaerner Australia work was carried out in Melbourne in close liaison with Kvaerner Process Systems whose work elements were co-ordinated out of their offices in Houston, USA; Perth, Australia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The CO2 removal facilities utilise proprietary MEDAL polyimide hollow fibre membrane technology owned by Air Liquide.
Aker Kvaerner Australia Managing Director, Mr Tom Quinn, said, "This project demonstrates Aker Kvaerner Australia's ability to continue to deliver integrated engineering, procurement and construction with single point accountability."
Aker Kvaerner Australia was the engineering contractor for three previous major development phases for the Ballera Gas Centre in the late 1990s. "It is also pleasing to successfully complete this project for Santos, with whom we have a long standing and valued relationship" said Tom Quinn.
